The Barg story began in 1954 in the vibrant heart of Kabul's Grand Bazaar. Our grandfather Ahmad started with a humble wooden cart and a singular obsession: crafting the perfect Sheeryakh — Afghanistan's beloved rose-water ice cream. Hand-churned with pure rose water, crushed pistachios, and fragrant cardamom, his recipe became the most sought-after treat in the district. Word spread fast.
That spirit of authentic craft grew with each generation. When our family brought Barg to Alexandria, Virginia, we carried more than recipes — we carried the warmth, the generosity, and the pride of Afghan hospitality. Today, Barg Restaurant at 5774 Dow Avenue serves the DMV area's most authentic Halal Afghan cuisine, from Qabili Palaw to charcoal-grilled kebabs.
Every dish on our menu — from our signature charcoal-grilled lamb kebabs to our fragrant Kabuli Pulao and legendary Sheeryakh — follows the same recipes, the same 100% Halal sourcing, and the same three-generation standard of craft. We don't claim to be the best Afghan restaurant in Alexandria — our guests have been saying that for us.
